MSSL Data Archive User Guides: Thumbnails

EIS is a very flexible instrument aboard on Hinode. Depending on EIS study design (or more specificaly, the raster design), EIS could do many kinds of different observations on the Sun, for example:
  • EIS could do sit & stare observation with 1" slit, or do scan observation with 40" wide slot.

  • The spectral window (Line window) used by EIS also varies, for example, EIS could use 15 lines in one observation.

  • The width of line window vary as well, eg. it could be from 24~288 pix to 1024 pix (ie. 1/4 full-ccd size).

MSSL Hinode/EIS website provides thumbnails for EIS "science" observation only.

The thumbnail generation is based on EIS fits file rather than EIS study or raster.

For multi-exposures EIS fits file, only one-exposure data will be processed at the moment.

Some EIS level-0 fits files are processed to make level-2 data. Level 2 data is derived from basic calibration and autonomous spectral fitting (hence done only for 1" and 2" data). For these the user is warned that these areautonomous fitting and hence will not necessarily take into consideration multiple components in a spectral line/blends etc., but are there to guide the user to interesting velocity events. Level 2 includes line width and line shift maps and can be downloaded in the same way as level 0 data is.

Roughly, EIS fits files can be categorized as the following table:

The EXAMPLES for each type of thumbnails are explained here:

Type 1:

example fits file: eis_l0_20070207_002712.fits

This fits file is satisfying conditions of making level-2 data: 1" slit, scanning, spectral window width < 1024 pix, so there are velocity and width map as thumbnails

Velocity map:

Width map:

There is also corresponding EIS level-2 fits file been generated

Type 2:

example fits file: eis_l0_20070125_201520.fits

This fits file is NOT satisfying conditions of making level-2 data because spectral window width = 1024 pix, so there are no velocity and width map as thumbnails

This thumbnail inlcudes:
* a spaital image which formed by multiple lines observed by EIS
* an image showing spectral lines on EIS CCD
* a average spectrum for this spectal window

Type 3:

example fits file: eis_l0_20070125_153856.fits

This fits file is satisfying conditions of making level-2 data: 2" slit, scanning, spectral window width < 1024 pix, so there are velocity and width map as thumbnails

Velocity map:

Width map:

There is also corresponding EIS level-2 fits file been generated

Type 4:

example fits file: N/A

Type 5:

example fits file: eis_l0_20070110_014833.fits

This fits file is doing sacn with 40" slot. There are 3 raster steps, so the full image is formed by compositing 3 raster images together.

The blank gap between each raster image is caused from that the width of line window (spectral window) is shorter than raster step!

There is no level-2 products for this fits file!

Type 6:

example fits file: N/A

Type 7:

example fits file: eis_l0_20061122_224822.fits

This fits file is doing sacn with 266" slot. There are a few raster steps, so the full image is formed by compositing all raster images together.

There is no level-2 products for this fits file!

Type 8:

example fits file: eis_l0_20070213_004019.fits

This fits file is doing sacn with 266" slot, but the line window is 1024 pix wide. The thumbnail here only shows image on EIS CCD.

As the wide slot is used, there are significant overlaps in each line window.

There is no level-2 products for this fits file!

Type 9:

example fits file: eis_l0_20070110_041212.fits

This fits file is doing sits & stare observation with 1" slit.

The thumbnail includes four sub-figures (from left-top, clockwise):

* Intensity Variation against Exposures;
* Image of the spectral window on EIS CCD (X-unit: pixel);
* Line profile (avg.) of the corresponding spectral window (X-unit: angostrom);
* Line ctroid against Exposures (so called "Whisker" figure

There is no level-2 products for this fits file!

see _xfiles_ for more information about Type 9 thumbnail

Type 10:

example fits file: eis_l0_20070110_040427.fits

This fits file is NOT satisfying conditions for generaitng level-2 data products as the spectral window width = 1024 pix, so there is no level-2 products, such as velocity and width map as thumbnails for this fits file

This thumbnail inlcudes an image showing all spectral lines observed on this EIS CCD, and an average spectrum for each line widnow (in this case: 1024 pixs - 1/4 full-CCD wide).

Type 11:

It is simlar as Type 9.
example fits file: N/A

Type 12:

It is simlar as Type 10.
example fits file: N/A

Type 13:

example fits file: eis_l0_20070213_114313.fits

This fits file is doing sits & stare observation with 40" slit.

The thumbnail shows 40"-wide area on the Sun.

No level-2 products for this fits file!

Type 14:

example fits file: eis_l0_20070110_040212.fits

This fits file is doing sit & stare observation with 40" slot, but the line window is 1024 pix wide. The thumbnail here only shows image on EIS CCD.

Each small strip on CCD image means one spectral line observed by EIS.

There is no level-2 products for this fits file!

Type 15:

example fits file: eis_l0_20070401_001221.fits

This fits file is doing sit & stare observation with 266" slot.

The thumbnail shows 266"-wide area on the Sun.

There is no level-2 products for this fits file!

Type 16:

example fits file: eis_l0_20061104_150030.fits

This fits file is doing sit & stare observation with 266" slot, but the line window is 1024 pix wide. The thumbnail here only shows image on EIS CCD.

There is no level-2 products for this fits file!
